Evesham War Memorial

Located in Abbey Park, Worcestershire, the Evesham War Memorial commemorates the men who fought and died in the First and Second World Wars. The structure comprises a curved limestone screen, and at its centre is a pedestal topped by a bronze sculpture of a soldier.

To mark 100 years since the end of World War One, a project was commissioned to illuminate the memorial and showcase it even during the dark evenings and nights. The lighting of the memorial was also part of the wider Enlighten Evesham project; a series of lighting schemes around Evesham to reflect the town’s rich and interesting heritage.

Ridge and Partners were appointed as the property and construction consultants to oversee and complete the project, and chose to use Architainment for project support. Architainment supplied seven ColorBurst Powercore Gen2 LED spotlights from the Philips Color Kinetic range, which were situated on a semi-circular grass area, pointing towards the memorial. Various lenses were used to capture the detail of stonework and light up the soldier sculpture.

The ColorBurst Powercore Gen 2 spotlights provide static colours of either red or white to illuminate the main scenes, but also offer the flexibility to be altered to a different colour to support special events and occasions.

To control the spotlights, Architainment supplied a Pharos TPC system. Not only does this offer full control of the lighting for the memorial, as more illuminated areas are developed in Abbey Park as part of the second phase of Enlighten Evesham, these can be integrated into the Pharos system as well.

Andrew Selwood, Associate at Ridge and Partners, said:

“We worked closely with Architainment to design a lighting installation that was sympathetic to the lighting of a war memorial. We undertook the design of the lighting installation and the controls, which was enhanced through Architainment’s expertise with Pharos Controls and understanding on how to best wire the installation. Architainment supported us throughout, including our initial Tender interview, guidance on luminaire types to fit our budget, producing mock-ups complete with temporary generators and the final commissioning. We are immensely proud of our involvement with this worthy project, commemorating the 100-year anniversary of the ending of World War I. We could not have achieved such a smooth installation and design without the continued assistance and after sales support of the Architainment team.”

The newly illuminated memorial was opened on 11 November and around 300 people attended the event. The structure will be permanently lit so anyone visiting from dusk to 11pm will be able to enjoy the experience and reflect on what the memorial signifies.

Nic Tolkien, Architainment Lighting’s Managing Director, concluded:

“This was such a special installation as it had so much meaning and emotion attached to it. We were honoured to have a role in illuminating the Evesham War Memorial, allowing it to become a poignant place for visitors even after night falls.”
