One Aldwych Hotel

Lighting Designer: StudioFractal

When lighting any project, it is always our goal to provide luminaires that create a stunning effect. When you are lighting a five-star luxury hotel, like the One Aldwych in London, the final result needs to be outstanding.

Founded by Gordon Campbell Gray, the 105-room hotel in the Edwardian Inveresk House, This Grade II listed building is an early example of steel-framed construction and is clad in grey Norwegian granite with a slate and copper roof, in a blend of Louis XVI and Louis XV architectural styles. As a result, when creating a lighting solution for the exterior of the building, it had to be both tastefully done to fit with the hotel’s style, and it also needed to be installed within the strict guidelines for a Grade II listed building.

Rising to this double challenge, lighting designers StudioFractal created a carefully modulated lighting scheme for the hotel’s façades. Following their ethos of using as little light as necessary, StudioFractal created a design that used controlled illumination from low profile lighting equipment to complement and enhance the rhythm and rich detailing of the building. Lighting trials were carried out to confirm the exact placement of fixtures and to get the right optical properties and warm colour temperature needed  to create a dramatic, yet elegant presence that adds to London’s ever changing night-time experience.

Architainment has supplied lighting for many high-profile StudioFractal projects. For One Aldwych, StudioFractal contacted us primarily for our ArchiPower enclosure service. Based on the requirements of the project, we provided three custom-built Philips Dynalite control enclosures, which control the lights on the Ground to 2nd floor, 3rd floor to 5th floor and the 6th floor and the roof. Having multiple control enclosures provides convenient wiring points and reduces cable runs, offering ease of installation and trouble-free control of the lighting fixtures.

In addition, we did also provide some IP67-rated luminaires from our Opaline Flex SB and Opaline M ranges. These low-profile linear luminaires are ideal for any outdoor application and the Opaline Flex fittings can be also bent to follow the contours of a building, such as One Aldwych’s historic exterior.
