Few venues in the world carry the sense of anticipation, history, and magic found at the Royal Albert Hall. While its auditorium is rightly celebrated, the backstage spaces are just as vital. None more so than the Artists Bar, where performers gather before and after stepping onto one of the most prestigious stages in the world.
Opened in December 2025 and designed by BDP, the new Artists Bar transforms a previously forgotten industrial space into an intimate retreat that radiates warmth, sophistication, and creative flair. Supporting BDP’s vision, Architainment Lighting supplied a suite of custom lighting solutions from our versatile Architape range. The result is a scheme that blends technical precision with artistic ambience, enhancing the space while preserving its timeless character.
Here, lighting needed to do more than simply illuminate. It had to sit comfortably alongside historic architecture, create an inviting and restorative environment, and remain flexible enough to suit a wide range of moods and moments. Architape offered the perfect balance between performance, adaptability, and subtlety.

At the heart of the space lies the bar counter itself. Framed with Architape Opaline Flex SB 10W 3000K, it emits a soft, consistent warm glow that enhances the richness of marble and wood finishes. This diffused light creates an immediate focal point, welcoming artists the moment they step inside.

Behind the bar, Architape A005M luminaires fitted with Architape Pro 100 5W 3000K LED tape provide gentle, precise accents. These highlights add depth and sparkle to bottles and shelving, drawing the eye without overwhelming the senses.

Above the seating areas, cove lighting using Opaline Flex TW Side B introduces tuneable white control. This allows the atmosphere to shift effortlessly from bright, energising tones before a performance to softer, warm tones for post-show reflection.
Additional flexibility is layered behind the seating through a combination of tuneable white and RGB fixtures. Using Architape Pro 100 TW2 and Architape Pro 100 RGB, these
concealed elements maintain a refined baseline ambience while allowing creative expression during special events and celebrations.
Architectural features above the seating are subtly picked out with individual A005M luminaires housing Architape Pro 100 TW2. These discrete touches provide spatial definition and visual comfort, gently guiding the eye without competing with the room’s overall aesthetic.

Even circulation areas were carefully considered. Discreet A018N luminaires incorporate slimline Architape Pro 175 tape into the staircase, ensuring safe movement while blending seamlessly into the surrounding design.
Every detail of the Artists Bar required a tailored approach. Working closely with BDP, Architainment developed bespoke solutions that respected the Royal Albert Hall’s architectural heritage while addressing its unique spatial challenges. From manufacturing flexible fixtures to fit intricate coves, to balancing colour temperature across varied materials, precision was key at every stage.
The refurbished Artists Bar now offers something truly special. Lighting here is not merely decorative – it is supportive, atmospheric, and intentionally crafted. Drawing on the flexibility of the Architape range, the space harmonises mood, function, and architectural beauty, creating a haven where performers can pause, recharge, and celebrate.
