Fata Morgana, Clerkenwell Design Week 2023

Architainment brings an ethereal lighting installation to life

At Clerkenwell Design Week 2023, Fata Morgana invited visitors into an immersive world of reflection, colour and atmospheric light. The installation was conceived by Jestico + Whiles and brought to life in partnership with Studio Fractal, with Architainment Lighting delivering the technical backbone required to transform the concept into a fully realised experience.

Providing the Lighting, Control and Technical Support Architainment supplied all lighting equipment for the project, including the Architape Opaline M RGB luminaires that illuminated the Notpla seaweed paper structure. Working closely with the design team, Architainment ensured the luminaires were configured and integrated precisely to meet the artistic and architectural requirements of the space.

Beyond equipment supply, Architainment played a critical role in programming, testing and commissioning the lighting sequences developed by Jestico + Whiles design team. Using a Pharos LPC controller, the team implemented a series of dynamic themes inspired by natural phenomena – starlight, drifting clouds, underwater movement and glacial hues – each designed to shift the viewer’s perception as they moved through the installation.

Remote Monitoring and Reliability The lighting system was connected to our ArchiCloud remote monitoring platform. This allowed real-time oversight of system status throughout the festival, ensuring smooth operation and quick support if needed. The platform also enabled fine-tuning of sequences and transitions to maintain the desired emotional tone of the installation.

Material Innovation Enhanced by Expert Lighting Delivery

The use of Notpla seaweed paper added a sustainable and organic quality to the installation, but it also required careful handling and sensitive illumination. Architainment’s expertise ensured that the luminaires were calibrated to preserve the delicate textures and enhance the material’s translucency without overpowering it.

A Seamless Collaboration

Through a combination of equipment provision, control system programming and on-site support, Architainment helped transform Fata Morgana from concept to reality. The installation demonstrated not only the power of lighting design, but also the importance of technical partnership in creating meaningful and engaging public experiences.
