Lumen Drift, CDW 2025

A Complete Lighting Solution Delivered by Architainment

At Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) 2025, award-winning studio Jestico + Whiles partnered with Studio Fractal and Architainment Lighting to deliver LUMEN DRIFT—a powerful, immersive installation that brought a centuries-old story from the heart of Clerkenwell into the present day.

From hardware supply to programming and remote system oversight, Architainment provided a complete end-to-end lighting solution that enabled the installation’s emotional narrative to come alive.

A Story Carried by Light

The installation retells the true story of Mary Moore and Ann Wade; two young girls arrested in 1825 for stealing fabric. Initially condemned to death, they were ultimately spared and transported to Australia thanks to reformist Elizabeth Fry. Visitors passed through a “forest of cloth”—a tactile metaphor for the stolen fabric—guided emotionally by a carefully choreographed lighting narrative.

Architainment’s Integrated Lighting Solution

Architainment provided all the lighting and controls for the installation, including programming of the lighting effects. The Architape Opaline RGB luminaires used in the

installation came from the previous CDW installations and were chosen for their soft diffusion, colour consistency, and ability to highlight delicate textures within the fabric of this year’s installation. To bring Studio Fractal’s hour-long show to life, Architainment provided a Pharos LPC (Lighting Playback Controller) which managed timed colour transitions, interactive layers responding to visitor movement and synchronisation of narrative lighting cues. Its flexibility and reliability made it a perfect match for an installation requiring both emotional subtlety and technical precision.

Architainment’s technical team also handled the programming of the lighting sequences, onsite commissioning and fine-tuning of the luminaires and control system to match the artistic intent. This ensured the lighting behaved precisely as envisioned, supporting mood shifts from bleakness to hope.

Throughout the exhibition, Architainment provided remote support through the ArchiCloud platform, enabling system health monitoring, status checks and remote adjustments. This ensured uninterrupted performance during the entire event.

Sustainable Thinking in Action

After the show, the luminaires returned to Architainment for future projects, supporting circular design principles and reducing environmental impact.

A Standout at CDW 2025

LUMEN DRIFT demonstrated how lighting, storytelling, and technology can work together to create an emotional, historically rich installation. By supplying the luminaires, lighting controls, programming, and commissioning, Architainment played a central role in delivering a seamless, expressive visitor experience that captivated visitors throughout CDW 2025.
