Lighting for the Revealing the Charterhouse Project
Lighting a site as historically rich as the Charterhouse demands restraint, sensitivity and precision. As part of the Revealing the Charterhouse project, Architainment partnered with Graham Festenstein Lighting Design (GFLD) to deliver bespoke lighting for the museum, reception and gardens, enhancing the visitor experience while remaining unobtrusive within a complex Grade I listed setting.
The wider scheme introduced a new public-facing museum, reception and learning spaces, alongside improved external access and landscaping. Working with Eric Parry Architects, GFLD’s design intent was a clean, contemporary intervention that would sit quietly within the historic fabric rather than compete with it.
At the external entrance and chapel courtyard, Architainment supplied discreet ankle-level linear lighting, carefully integrated into low architectural elements. This approach provides clear and safe wayfinding after dark without relying on visible fixtures.
By concealing the light sources within the architecture, the scheme creates a calm and intuitive route through the gardens, preserving the character and tranquillity of the historic setting.
Within the museum reception, Architainment worked with Graham to develop a bespoke solution for the octagonal ceiling fittings, conceived as a contemporary interpretation of Tudor ceiling geometry.
The shallow ceiling void and listed constraints presented significant technical challenges. In response, Architainment engineered custom-integrated luminaires that deliver even illumination and visual comfort while remaining sensitive to the existing structure. Close coordination with the design team and installers ensured the system could be incorporated with minimal intervention to the historic fabric.
The result is a reception space that feels bright, open and welcoming, with the lighting fully embedded into the architectural language rather than applied as a separate layer.
