Trafalgar Square Fountain Lighting, UK

Trafalgar Square is one of London’s most iconic public spaces—a place where history, culture, and modern infrastructure come together. This year, the square’s famous fountains received a striking upgrade, introducing a new illumination system that transforms the space after dark.

Delivering a project of this scale requires more than simply selecting high-quality luminaires. Architainment Lighting played a central role throughout the process, collaborating with our supplier partners to specify the ideal solution for these historic monuments and providing the cloud-based control system that enables the Greater London Authority (GLA) to manage the lighting remotely.

The fountains required lighting that could withstand a challenging underwater environment while delivering exceptional visual impact. Working closely with our supplier partner Lumascape, we specified the Woda Brass WB3 (LS5330 RGBW) luminaires.

Each fixture delivers up to 1,530 lumens, offering vivid, saturated colours as well as crisp, uniform white light. The compact form factor and robust engineering made the WB3 the perfect fit for the existing fountain infrastructure. Every luminaire is also individually DMX controlled, enabling dynamic light shows and flexible programming.

Installation was completed using the existing lighting pits and ducts, with an ArchiPower Enclosure providing power and data to each fountain. Lumascape’s PowerSync technology streamlined wiring and commissioning, allowing the upgrade to be carried out with minimal disruption to the thousands of daily visitors in Trafalgar Square.

The whole system is controlled from a third ArchiPower enclosure fitted with a Pharos LPC 1 Controller connected to the internet via our ArchiCloud remote management system. This same system already manages the lighting at London City Hall, meaning multiple major landmarks can now operate through a single, unified ArchiCloud dashboard, simplifying maintenance and enhancing operational efficiency.

Next time you visit Trafalgar Square after dusk, take a moment to watch the fountains come alive. What appears to be a simple interplay of colour and light is, in fact, a sophisticated lighting system brought to life by the team at Architainment Lighting.
