Gasholders, London

Gasholders London is an exclusive residential development comprising of 145 apartments, set within a triplet of listed gasholder guide frames in King’s Cross, London. Architainment Lighting was approached by lighting designers Speirs + Major to supply a breadth of solutions to support the completion of the project.

An important part of the project was to create a strong visual identity, while showcasing the historic industrial architecture of the gasholders and enhancing the modern elements of the development. It was also vital that the needs of the residents were met and the lighting delivered the right ambience and feel.

To highlight the architectural features of the apartment blocks, warm light is grazed up the front face of each of the columns. A custom designed lighting solution uses multiple lensed LEDs to restrict the light only to the architecture, avoiding any light spill into windows or into the sky. The central external space is also illuminated with a gentle glow.

Inside the atria, concealed lights have been used to deliver a comfortable environment for residents and visitors, which are programmed to respond to colour and level changes in the natural light. This cleverly detailed cove lighting provides a wash of light to the circular walls, and is concealed from all viewing angles.

Warm personal lights are provided by custom fixtures at each apartment, and bespoke lanterns light up the communal areas of the atria and the roof garden.

Neil Gamble, Architainment Lighting’s Sales Director said:

“Gasholders is an architecturally stunning space, so to play a role in its completion was a fantastic opportunity.

“The combination of historic, industrial features with a modern and design-led approach has resulted in a spectacular apartment development.

“It was great to work with Speirs + Major again on this project, who never fail to amaze with their unique approach to each of their lighting designs.”
